Mr. Zelensky said that Vladimir Putin, who gave a New Year's speech while surrounded by people in uniform, was hiding behind his troops and not leading them.
On Saturday, there were deadly attacks all over Ukraine, and Mr. Zelensky said that Ukrainians would never forgive Russia. At least one person died in the attacks, and many more were hurt.
Valerii Zaluzhny, the head of the Ukrainian military, said on Saturday that air defenses had shot down 12 of 20 Russian cruise missiles. Officials say there were more missile attacks on Kyiv just a few hours into the New Year on Sunday. Overnight, the Ukrainian Air Force said that it had shot down 45 kamikaze drones made in Iran.
But the strikes, which happened in the first few hours of 2023, made Ukrainians even more angry and hateful. They were already sick of Russia's constant air campaign. As explosions shook the capital, some people sang the national anthem, and officials said that Russia was targeting civilians who were getting together to celebrate the New Year on purpose.
The head of the Kyiv police, Andriy Nebitov, posted a picture of a crashed drone with the words "Happy New Year" written in Russian on it. "That's everything you need to know about the terror state and its army," he wrote on Facebook, adding that the remains had crashed in a children's playground.
The most recent attack came two days after one of the biggest air strikes since the war started. In the past few weeks, dozens of attacks have caused the power to go out again and again. Moscow has said many times that it didn't aim at civilians, but Mr. Putin recently said that they did hit important energy facilities.
In a message on his Telegram channel, Mr. Zelensky said that the people who attacked on Saturday were cruel. He then went after Mr. Putin in Russian after switching from Ukrainian.
He said:
“„Your leader wants to show you that he's leading from the front, and his military is behind him. But in fact he is hiding. He's hiding behind his military, his missiles, the walls of his residences and palaces. He's hiding behind you, and he's burning your country and your future. No-one will forgive you for terror. No-one in the world will forgive you for that. Ukraine will not forgive.- Ukraine President, Volodymyr Zelensky
Later, Mr. Zelensky gave a speech to the Ukrainian people on New Year's Eve. He thanked them for their "incredible" efforts to stop Russian advances. "We fight as one team - the whole country, all our regions. I admire you all. I want to thank every invincible region of Ukraine," he said.
Mr. Putin also gave a New Year's address that was broadcast in all 11 time zones of Russia as if it were 2023. He tried to get people to support his troops fighting in Ukraine by saying that the future of the country was at stake.
In a combative mood, Mr. Putin said:
“„We always knew, and today it is confirmed to us yet again, that a sovereign, independent and secure future for Russia depends only on us, on our strength and will.- Russian President, Vladimir Putin
He said that the invasion of Ukraine's sovereign land was about "defending our people and our historical lands" and that "moral, historical rightness is on our side".
Conclusion
Mr. Putin also said that the West had "provoked" Russia to invade Ukraine on February 24. "The West lied about peace. It was preparing for aggression... and now they are cynically using Ukraine and its people to weaken and split Russia," he said. Ukraine and the West don't believe what Russia said about when the attack began.
