Under the new rules, both teams are entitled to at least one possession in overtime, regardless of the outcome of the initial possession. If the score remains tied after each team's possession, the next score determines the winner. However, the game could conclude after one possession if the team receiving the kickoff concedes a safety.
In the Super Bowl, the San Francisco 49ers won the overtime coin toss and opted to take the ball first. Despite advancing into the red zone, the 49ers' drive stalled, resulting in a field goal that momentarily put them ahead 22-19.
Niners head coach Kyle Shanahan defended the decision to receive the ball first, stating, “If both teams matched and scored, we wanted to be the ones with the chance to go win it.” However, the Chiefs had other plans, as Mahomes orchestrated a decisive drive culminating in Hardman's game-winning reception.
