The title of Miss Universe has been won by someone new! After a night of competition at the José Adolfo Pineda Arena in San Salvador, El Salvador, on Saturday, Miss Nicaragua was named Miss Universe 2023.
Just before the winner was revealed, Miss Nicaragua, Sheynnis Palacios, and Miss Thailand, Anntonia Porsild, stood on stage with their hands clasped together as the venue went dark, with only a spotlight shining on the two contestants.
It is the first time in history that a Nicaraguan woman has won Miss Universe. She had been Miss Nicaragua in the 2017 Teen Miss Universe pageant and placed in the top 10. She had also been Miss Nicaragua in the Miss World pageant in 2021.
Miss Nicaragua Hailed As Miss Universe 2023
Finally, Sheynnis Palacios of Nicaragua was named Miss Universe 2023. The yearly beauty pageant took place on Saturday night in San Salvador, the capital of El Salvador.
The communicologist Palacios, who is 23 years old, said she wants to work to improve mental health because she has had crippling anxiety attacks in the past. Because she has had problems with worry herself, Palacios has decided to make mental health her cause. She has even started a TV show called "Understand Your Mind" where she talks to experts on mental health.
The first runner-up was Miss Thailand Anntonia Porsild, and the second runner-up was Miss Australia Moraya Wilson. The last two contestants in the top five were Miss Puerto Rico Karla Guilfú and Miss Colombia Camila Avella. Athenea Pérez, who is Miss Spain, won the title of Miss Congeniality this year.
At this year's Miss Universe, contestants from 84 different countries competed. The winners were chosen by a panel that included model Halima Aden, "Queer Eye" star Carson Kressley, TikTok influencer Avani Gregg, and Janelle Commissiong of Trinidad & Tobago (Miss Universe 1977) and Iris Mittenaere of France (Miss Universe 2016).
Twenty semi-finalists were revealed at Mind, the start of Saturday night's show based on the results of the preliminary competition and a vote by fans around the world. After the swimsuit round, the field was cut down to 10. Miss Nepal, who was the first "curvy" contestant to make it to the semi-finals, and Miss Pakistan, who was the first woman to wear a burkini, were both eliminated.
