Perry, who played Chandler Bing on "Friends" for 10 seasons, died near the funeral almost a week ago. It looks like he drowned. Authorities found the 54-year-old star "unconscious in a stand-alone jacuzzi" in his Pacific Palisades home on October 28. On Monday, October 30, the Los Angeles Fire Department confirmed that he had "deceasedprior to the first responder's arrival." A lab report is still being made, so the official cause of his death has not been determined yet.
Deadline said that Perry's father, John Bennett Perry, and stepfather, Keith Morrison, were also at the two-hour service. Before, the cast of Friends said in a statement to Peoplethat they were sad about the death of their friend and former co-star, who was discovered dead in his hot tub.
We are all so utterly devastated by the loss of Matthew. We were more than just cast mates. We are a family. There is so much to say, but right now we’re going to take a moment to grieve and process this unfathomable loss. In time we will say more, as and when we are able. For now, our thoughts and our love are with Matty’s family, his friends, and everyone who loved him around the world.- Friends cast
Friends and co-stars of Perry's have also talked about how much she meant to them. Bradley Whitford co-starred with Perry in Aaron Sorkin's 2006 show Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. In an Instagram post, Whitford talked about Perry's "huge, open heart and a pyrotechnical, joyous brain"adding that Perry's "most beautiful parts of Matt made him the most vulnerable to the monster that he would have to fight for the rest of his life."
In her own post, Salma Hayek, who worked with Perry in the comedy Fools Rush In, said she would "continue to cherish" the actor's "silliness" and "lovely heart."
There was news about the creation of the Matthew Perry Foundation on Friday, the day before the funeral. The National Philanthropic Trust sponsors and runs the group. Its goal is to help people who are struggling with addiction. Perry wrote and talked openly about his own struggles with addiction in his memoir Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing, which came out in 2022. Donations can be sent to the charity, which will be “guided by [Perry's] own words and experiences and driven by his passion for making a difference in as many lives as possible.”
In keeping with Matthew Perry's lifelong desire to help people who are struggling with addiction, the Matthew Perry Foundation was created to honor his memory. It was inspired by his own words and experiences and driven by his desire to make a difference in as many lives as possible, according to a statement from the foundation.
Perry had talked a lot about how he wanted to be known for his work to help people who were addicted to drugs or alcohol. He said on an episode of the Q with Tom Power showin November 2022:
When I die, as far as my so-called accomplishments go, it would be nice if Friends were listed far behind the things I did to try to help other people. I know it won’t happen, but it would be nice.- Matthew Perry
He then said:
The best thing about me, bar none, is that if an alcoholic or drug addict comes up to me and says, ‘Will you help me?’ I can say yes and follow up and do it.- Matthew Perry
