Finland elects former prime minister Alexander Stubb as president. Alexander Stubb's victory in Finland's presidential election represents the culmination of a distinguished political career marked by leadership and public service. As a former Prime Minister and seasoned statesman, Stubb brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the presidency, positioning him to address the pressing challenges facing Finland with confidence and resolve.
Finland's presidential election was won by Alexander Stubb of the center-right National Coalition Party, who defeated Pekka Haavisto of the liberal Green Party, who conceded the race.
Stubb is a fervent admirer of Ukraine, which has adopted a firm posture against Russia, and is pro-European. The 55-year-old Mr. Stubb has a tough stance toward Russia, with whom the Nordic country shares a lengthy land border.
As soon as Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, he declared that his country was "done deal" to join NATO. Last April, Finland formally joined the alliance headed by Washington as its thirty-first member.
According to justice ministry data, he declared himself the winner of the run-off vote after receiving 51.6% of the total votes as 99.7% of the votes were counted, compared to 48.4% for Haavisto.
Finland maintains a long border with Russia, and the country's new head of state will be in charge of diplomatic and security affairs, including the recently adopted NATO member's position toward Moscow.
Throughout his campaign, Alexander Stubb outlined a comprehensive platform focused on economic prosperity, social cohesion, and environmental sustainability. Stubb's policy priorities include strengthening Finland's economy, investing in education and healthcare, and advancing efforts to combat climate change, aligning with the values and aspirations of the Finnish electorate.
During his live speech, Stubb referred to his triumph as "the greatest honor" of his life.
He stated:
The feeling is calm, humble but of course at the same time I am extremely happy and grateful that the Finns in such large numbers have voted and that I get to serve as president of the Republic of Finland- Alexander Stubb
The first round was won on January 28 by former prime minister Stubb, who received 27.2% of the vote over Haavisto's 25.8%. In opinion polls, he has also outperformed Haavisto, most recently by 6-8% percentage points.
Stubb's presidency holds significant implications for Finland's domestic governance and its role in the international arena. As a respected statesman with a track record of diplomatic engagement, Stubb is poised to strengthen Finland's position on the global stage and advance its interests in key areas such as security, trade, and multilateral cooperation.
On March 1st, Mr. Stubb will formally take over as Sauli Niinisto's successor. The head of state of Finland is in charge of the nation's armed forces and has direct authority over foreign and security policy.
