DreamWorks Animation is cutting jobs and letting go of 4% of its staff. The cuts are being made because the business is going through a bad patch, labor costs are going up, and there are strikes. A DWA spokesperson told Deadline in a statement:
DreamWorks Animation reduced its workforce by approximately 70 positions. Roles affected were across corporate functions, feature, television and technology departments as part of an overall cost-reduction.- DreamWorks Animation
Cartoon Brewclaimed that DreamWorks is shifting away from making movies all by itself and will rely more on other studios as a way to cut costs.
The animation company is putting out "Trolls Band Together" on November 17. For the third movie's soundtrack, NSYNC will perform "Better Place" together again after almost 20 years. Justin Timberlake, Anna Kendrick, Camila Cabello, Eric André, Kid Cudi, Troye Sivan, Daveed Diggs, Amy Schumer, RuPaul, Kenan Thompson, and other famous people have done voice work for the cartoon movie.
Aside from the Trolls movie, DreamWorks Animation and Netflix are also working together on an animation movie called Orion and The Dark. This group project will be available on the streaming service in 2024. It was written by the famous Charlie Kaufman. The movie, which was directed by Sean Charmatz and produced by Peter McCown, shows off the skills of voice actors Paul Walter Hauser and Jacob Tremblay.
In September, news sites were the first to report that Apple TV+ had ordered the new animated show "Curses!" from DreamWorks Animation, with John Krasinski as one of the show's executive producers.
The official description states,"When a generations-long family curse turns Alex Vanderhouven to stone, it’s up to his two kids, Pandora and Russ, and his wife Sky, to return artifacts stolen by their ancestors to their rightful homes to finally lift the curse for good."
The company let go of 33 workers in May, which was a 2% drop in staff. At the time, they said it was part of an "overall cost-reduction plan across all studios." The layoffs are part of a larger trend in the entertainment industry this year that has seen companies like Disney, Electronic Arts, and Epic Games shrink and cut costs, which has caused thousands of jobs to be lost.
The company has had recent box office hits with "The Bad Guys" and "Puss in Boots: The Last Wish," so the layoffs come at an odd time. The company also has a lot of exciting new projects coming out soon, such as the high-grossing franchise movies Trolls: Band Together and Kung Fu Panda 4.
It's clear that DreamWorks Animation's recent staff cuts have had a big effect on the studio's work and projects. It's time to look more closely at how these budget cuts have affected the release of the third Trolls movie and how they have changed the Orion and The Dark Cartoon movies.
DreamWorks Animation is a prominent American animation studio renowned for its contribution to the world of animated films and television series. Established in 1994 as part of DreamWorks SKG, a multimedia conglomerate co-founded by entertainment industry titans Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg, and David Geffen, DreamWorks Animation initially operated as a division within the larger DreamWorks studio but eventually emerged as a separate, publicly traded entity.
The studio has made a lasting mark on the animation industry by producing a diverse array of beloved animated franchises. Among its most notable creations are the following:
One of DreamWorks Animation's standout franchises is "Shrek," which has captured audiences with its clever humor, whimsical fairy tale parodies, and unforgettable characters. The series revolves around the adventures of Shrek, a lovable green ogre, and his companions.
Another popular franchise is "Madagascar," known for its humorous storytelling and catchy music. It follows a group of zoo animals - such as a zebra, a lion, a giraffe, and a hippo who escape from their New York City habitat and find themselves in the wilds of Madagascar.
The "How to Train Your Dragon" series explores the enchanting bond between humans and dragons in a fantastical realm. It tells the tale of a young Viking named Hiccup and his dragon companion, Toothless.
"Kung Fu Panda" is yet another successful DreamWorks Animation franchise, featuring Po, a bumbling yet endearing panda who rises to become a martial arts hero. The films seamlessly blend comedy with martial arts action, captivating audiences of all ages.
Due to staff cuts at DreamWorks Animation, the highly awaited third movie in the Trolls series will not come out as soon as planned. The company has had to reevaluate its timelines and resources because of a smaller staff, which has slowed down the progress of the film. People who like the Trolls' bright and musical world will have to wait a little longer for the next journey.

Last Words

About 70 people worked for DreamWorks Animation before they were let go. This is the second time in less than six months that the company has cut staff. It looks like the reasons are a downturn in the business cycle, rising output costs, and labor strikes to some extent.
