Billboard is having a good time making a list of the 500 best pop songs of all time based on its own standards. By "pop," they mean "popular" and, most importantly, that the song has been on the Billboard Hot 100. The list includes songs from all kinds of musical styles; just look at the top 10 spots. Billboard said of the list:
We were looking for the songs that most fit our idea of pop music - catchy, tight, rousing, emotional, immaculately crafted, instantly memorable.- Billboard
There are artists on the list from "Lesley Gore to Carly Rae Jepsen, from Sam Cooke to SZA, from The Kinks to The Chainsmokers, from Chubby Checker to Rae Sremmurd,"who have been on Billboard's Hot 100 since the chart's start in 1958.
"I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)" by Whitney Houston is at the top of the list. "Dancing Queen" by ABBA is in second place, and "My Girl" by the Temptations is in third. 'I Want It That Way' by Backstreet Boys and 'Since U Been Gone' by Kelly Clarkson round out the top 5. There are some big hits in the top 10, like "Call Me Maybe" by Carly Rae Jepsen at number 8 "Like a Prayer" by Madonna at number 6, and "Billie Jean" by Michael Jackson at number 9.
There are a lot of classic songs in the top 100, like "All I Want for Christmas Is You" by Mariah Carey (97), "Mr. Brightside" by the Killers (90), and "Say My Name" by Destiny's Child (85). There are also a lot of megahits that have recently defined an era, like "Despacito" by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee (84) or "Blinding Lights" by The Weeknd (79). Hits like "Rehab" by Amy Winehouse (73) and "Wonderwall" by Oasis (48) are already very well known at this point in Time. 'Drivers License,' by Olivia Rodrigo, from 2021, is one of the newest. It comes in at number 72.
"Macarena" by Los Del Río is at number 500 on the list. Other songs on the list, like "Mi Gente" by J Balvin (459), are more current. Other songs on the list are classics from the past, like "Say a Little Prayer" by Dionne Warwick at number 430. It also has the nerve to include Lana Del Rey's "Summertime Sadness," but the Cedric Gervais version, at number 418. Then you can listen to "Hey Jude" by the Beatles (288) and "Boom Clap" by Charli XCX (226). Billboard doesn't hate Céline Dion like Rolling Stone does; her song "My Heart Will Go On" comes in at number 279.

Final Words

Billboard just put together a list of the 500 best pop songs ever to appear on their chart. Billboard says that "pop songs" are the "most catchy, tight, hooky, and instantly memorable songs that have taken over our lives for the past six and a half decades." That means the list will have music from a lot of different styles, like rock, hip-hop, R&B, country, and more.
