The Hill reports todaythat BP has established a $100 million fund to compensate rig workers who are out of a job because of the oil spill and the resulting Obama administration moratorium on deepwater drilling.
Gulf coast officials and others have arguedthat the moratorium has cost thousands of jobs in the region. This Rig Workers Assistance Fund is meant to address those losses.
According to The Hill, BP said the fund “fulfills the commitment BP announced on June 16 to provide $100 million in assistance as a gesture of good will for the people of the Gulf Coast region.” BP’s suggestion that the fund is a “gesture of good will” belies the fact that the moratorium wouldn’t be in place if the oil spill didn’t happen.
