This morning, the Department of Labor announcedthat new jobless claims decreased by 4,000 to 444,000. The four-week moving average declined to 450,000.
The slightly declining number, on one hand, is good news: Fewer Americans are reporting that they are out of work. But for the unemployment rate to drop — particularly given the climbing number of new entrants or re-entrants to the labor market — that jobless claim number needs to start falling much more quickly. Economists expected the number of initial claims to fall to 440,000.
