Speaking of Guantanamo, The New York Times profilesan Al Jazeera journalist, Sami al-Hajj, who was wrongly imprisoned there for seven years. We’ve had protests in this country for the past year in which overprivileged white conservatives bray about how the expansion of health care coverage to the most vulnerable Americans represents a despicable assault on freedom. I wonder whether a single one of them could tolerate imprisonment without charge for seven yearsand emerge not only as a functional human being but as a civil liberties correspondent for a major international news organization.
Freedom isn’t free; and some whiners are certainly treating it cheaply.
