Bob McDonnell Cited Michael ‘Porn Makes You Gay’ Schwartz in His 1989 Thesis
Blogger Lowell Feld notices that Michael Schwartz — the longtime conservative activist-turned-Hill staffer whom I heard wax poetic about the gay-making powers of pornography — was cited twice in Bob McDonnell’s notorious 1989 thesis. The Republican candidate for governor of Virginia cited Schwartz twice, once on an article Schwartz wrote about daycare, once for a piece of political thinking about the “division between those whose conservatism is defined by dollar signs and those whose conservatism is rooted in the family.”
As I wrote on Monday, McDonnell’s suddenly-embattled campaign provided an ironic context to the Values Voter Summit. The graduate of Pat Robertson’s Regent University had kept social issues out of the race for governor, and climbed up to a double-digit poll lead. The news of his extremely conservative thesis brought his numbers back down to earth.
