Specter Trails Toomey in Pennsylvania Senate Race « The Washington Independent

The Quinnipiac poll, taken before Sen. Arlen Specter (R-Penn.) switched his EFCA vote, finds the venerable moderate trailing conservative challenger Pat Toomey. Only 27 percent of Republicans remember who Toomey is, but he leads Specter 41-27 in a Senate primary.
Specter’s problems haven’t changed since last month. By a 59-36 margin, voters approve of Specter’s vote for the stimulus package — it’s popular in every area of the state. But Republicans oppose Specter’s stimulus vote 70-25.
The only bright spot for Specter is that the poll doesn’t include Peg Luksik, the fringe Republican and former Constitution Party candidate who entered the race before Toomey (who still hasn’t officially declared). Still, Specter would have to get more than 27 percent of the vote to win a three-way primary, especially when Luksik looks like a token candidate.
