Just out from the Pentagon:Headed to Afghanistan in late spring of 2009 are a combat brigade and a division HQ element:
Specific units receiving deployment orders include:
82nd Airborne Division Headquarters, Ft. Bragg, N.C.
4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Ft. Carson, Colo.
That’s about 4700 soldiers. Also, the 4th Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division, based out of Ft. Lewis, Wash., is slated to head to Iraq in the fall. That’s a Stryker brigade combat team; don’t look for it to be doing much advisory work. It’s replacing another unit that’s leaving Iraq, though, so don’t think that the force level is ramping up by its deployment.
Update: This post is wrong. The brigade and the division HQ unit will replace existing units in Afghanistan, making them separate from the plus-up. I regret the error — shouldn’t have read that press release so fast — and thank reader JF for pointing it out to me.
