DENVER — You know what we haven’t given due attention to? The conservatives lurking around the city, eager to stroke a PUMA, decry an elitist, defend the beleaguered cause of white America and generally put on a show of IRL trollery.
On Sunday, for instance, I was walking along the 16th Street Mall on my way to the Big Tent and a lady came up to me. Did I want a free DVD? Sure, I said, in keeping with my normally sensible policy of not turning away free DVDs. What did I get? Something called Obsession: Radical Islam’s War Against The West.Such famous no-nothings as Michael Medved calls it “one of the most powerful, expertly crafted and undeniably important films I’ve seen this year”! I wonder what kind of message they’re trying to send by, you know, passing out such anti-Muslim hysteria during Barack Obama’s nominating convention.
I thought about whether to watch the movie and decided, basically, screw it. We’ve seen so much small-minded, proudly ignorant portrayals of Muslims (oops, sorry, “radical Islam”) that, in truth, underminethe real-and-significant war on terrorism that we need never pay attention to this kind of dreck ever again. The ancestors of the 1.4 billion Muslims this film demonizes were developing calculus and advanced astronomy while the ancestors of these filmmakers were wandering about in caves. Everything this film espouses has been decisively disproven in the morass of Iraq and the malign neglect in Afghanistan.
Just one more thing. I attended the Arab American Institute’s “Comedy Kabob” stand-up event last night, and watching Maysoon Zayid and Dean Obeidallah laugh at the Middle East reminded me how easy, and pleasurable, it is not to give in to ignorance and hucksterism.
