Live at Winter Soldier II
In January, I previewed the Winter Soldier conference sponsored by Iraq Veterans Against the War. Winter Soldier is an investigation into “eyewitness accounts of the occupations,” as the veterans’ group says, to detail from first-hand experience what it considers the systemic brutality and dehumanization of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. It is consciously modeled on the supremely controversial Winter Soldier investigation in 1971.
I’m at the National Labor College in Silver Spring, Maryland for the conference. I’ll be blogging what promises to be a wrenching experience all day. Outside, a handful of protesters hold signs by the highway saying WINTER SOLDIER MY ASS and TROOPS TROOPS NOTHING BUT THE TROOPS. Inside, as the first panel, on “Rules of Engagement,” begins, the verification committee chairman, Jose Vasquez, alerts everyone that there will be mental health counseling on-site.
