Two inmates were killed in a massive riot Sunday in the country’s highest security prison, according to Colorado Confidential. Early news reports blamed racial tensions ignited by white prisoners celebrating Adolf Hitler’s birthday but reporter Erin Rosa says the problems run deeper at the Federal Correctional Complex in Florence.
Colorado Confidential obtained a internal memo in March showing the Bureau of Prisons was facing a projected budget shortfall of $289 million in funding and could be force to cut correctional staff positions to the point "where safety and securityof staff and inmates could be in jeopardy."
Rosa reported last September that the prison guards at the Florence facility were fearful and demoralizedabout low staffing levels.
"Either a [correctional officer's] going to have to get hurt or an inmate’s going to die before it gets corrected," one officer said.
