DES MOINES — Former U.S. Senator and GOP presidential candidate Rick Santorum(R-Penn) stopped at the Iowa Capitol Tuesday morning, after a visit to Ames and an interview on Fox News, to caucus with Iowa Senate Republicans.
Moments before, former Utah Gov. and China ambassador, Jon Huntsmanmade his 2012 bid official. Santorum gave little reaction, other than he was not surprised that Huntsman, who has indicated Iowa is not a campaign priority, entered and “I wouldn’t be surprised if more people decide to get in,” including Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who continues to mull a candidacy.
The field of GOP candidates vying for the White House is wide, and none of the candidates have been catch-fire yet. But Santorum advised this is not a sign of a decentralized Republican party, rather, the field indicates President Barack Obamais losing momentum, and Republicans are eager for the chance to defeat him in the election next year.
“I think there’s a lot of people looking at this race and saying, ‘If I can win the Republican primary, I can be president of United States,’” he said. “I think that is what this field says. This president is getting weaker and weaker and weaker as the days go on.”
Santorum has said he’s a “full spectrum Republican,”meaning he can appeal to both social and fiscal Republicans, though he has tended to focus on issues near and dear to the social and religious Conservative voter base — specifically being anti-gay marriage and anti-abortion.
Huntsman, a Mormon, does not support gay marriage, but is considered a fairly pro-gay rights Republican.
Santorum, a Catholic, has stood by the phrase that one-man-one-woman marriage is “the glue that holds the family together. If Jon Huntsman wants to go out and say he’s not in support of that institution, that’s fine with me.”
