Gov. Terry Branstadremained neutral on the 2012 presidential race after former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romneyrefused to confirm Friday about his participation the August Ames Republican straw poll and the February 2012 caucuses.
“Gov. Branstad believes all candidates should participate in the straw poll and caucuses, including Gov. Romney,” Branstad’s spokeman, Tim Albrecht told the Iowa Independent.
Days before Romney made his first 2011 visit to the Hawkeye State, Branstad said it would behoove the former Massachusetts Governor specifically to woo Iowa voters if he’s serious about running, and skipping the first-in-the-nation state would erroneous.
Romney, who is expected to declare his candidacy in New Hampshire this week, appeared skittish about confirming his attendance to either event, both of which are considered political staples in Iowa. He has announced staff appointments in Iowa.
Branstad did not publicly back a candidate in the 2008 presidential race, but was endorsed by both Romney and former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palinin the 2010 gubernatorial election.
