Freshman Republican U.S. Rep Renee Ellmers(N.C.) will chair the Subcommittee on Healthcare and Technology, which is part of the House Committee on Small Business. The position is instrumental in leading the implementation of federal health care reform, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.
As a candidate running against incumbent Rep. Bob Etheridge during last year’s campaign, Ellmers told the Clayton Daily Star she opposedthe provision in the federal health care reform law that barred insurance companies from refusing patients with pre-existing conditions. In addition, she questioned whether all insurance customers should have to help pay for maternity care.
Rep. Sam Graves (R-Mo.), chairman of the Small Business committee, appointed Ellmers to the position. “As a nurse and small business owner, Renee Ellmers will be a great resource as the Committee examines ways we can improve the health care law without creating new problems for American entrepreneurs,” said Graves.
The duties of the Healthcare and Technology subcommittee are:
  • Oversight of the implementation of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.
  • Oversight of availability and affordability of healthcare coverage for small businesses.
  • Oversight of general technology issues, including intellectual property policy in the United States.
  • Oversight of United States telecommunications policies including, but not limited to, the National Broadband Plan and allocation of electromagnetic spectrum.
  • The Small Business Innovation Research Program.
  • Small Business Technology Transfer Program.
