Discovery News reportson new research published in the Journal of Renewable and Sustainable Energy that finds wind speeds will decrease as a result of climate change, potentially threatening the world’s future reliance on wind power.
The paper, “Effects of Climate Change on Wind Energy Availability,” is written by Diandong Ren at the University of Texas at Austin’s Department of Geological Sciences. In the abstract of the paper, Ren argues that countries must quickly increase their dependence on renewable energy in order to stem the effects of climate change on wind speeds.
Ren said in the paper:
Reduction of wind power scales with the degree of warming according to a generic power-law relationship. Thus, the earlier we switch to clean energy, and thereby decrease the global climate warming trend, the more cost-effective will be the harnessing of wind energy.
I’ve never heard anything about the effects of climate change on wind. Any scientists out there want to weigh in? Is this legitimate research? Have you read similar things before?
