According to Chief of Transit Michael Kemper of the New York Police Department, the violence erupted when at least one individual brandished a firearm as two groups of teenagers were aboard a northbound No. 4 train.
The gunfire commenced as the train's doors opened, prompting chaos as passengers fled. Subsequent shots rang out on the platform, injuring both members of the teen groups and innocent bystanders. Initial reports of the incident began flooding in around 4:35 p.m.
"We don't believe this was a random shooting. We don't believe this was just an individual shooting indiscriminately onto a train. We believe this shooting all stemmed from a dispute between two groups that started on a train," Kemper told reporters at a news conference on the street beneath the station, which serves an elevated portion of the train system.
Police have reported that four males were shot during the incident, resulting in the death of a 34-year-old individual at a hospital. Among the wounded were a 15-year-old, a 28-year-old, and a 71-year-old, according to Kemper. However, authorities have not disclosed the specifics of their injuries. Additionally, a 14-year-old girl and a 29-year-old woman sustained gunshot wounds but are expected to recover from their non-life-threatening injuries, Kemper stated.

A law enforcement source informed reporters that the shooter fled the scene clad in a red jacket and ski mask. Authorities have stated that the number of suspects is under investigation, and they plan to release surveillance camera photos once they become available. Detectives are currently interviewing witnesses to gather more information about the shooting. Janno Lieber, the chair and CEO of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, expressed that such acts of violence are intolerable.
"New York's heart breaks," Lieber said. "New York's heart breaks when people are headed home, and kids who are coming home for school to do their homework, are subjected to random acts of violence, like what occurred here late this afternoon."
Tarik Sheppard, the deputy commissioner of public information for the police, delivered a firm message to the shooter.
