Pennsylvania Republicans Challenge States Vote-by-mail Law In Court
On Tuesday, 14 Republican state legislators filed a lawsuit contesting Pennsylvania's 2019 mail-in voting legislation, claiming it is illegal and must be repealed.
According to the Associated Press, existing legislation allows for "no-excuse" mail-in voting, which allows all citizens to vote by mail with or without a stated cause.
The Pennsylvania state constitution mandates that individuals with specified reasons for not voting in person, such as disabilities, illnesses, religious observances, or being out of town on business, be given the option to vote by mail.
Pennsylvania legislators approved the "no-excuse" vote-by-mail legislation in 2019, allowing all Pennsylvanians to vote by mail with or without an excuse.
Republican legislators, on the other hand, believe that the 2019 legislation is illegal since mail-in voting is only available to people who have a legitimate reason, such as medical or military service. The lawsuit was brought by 11 of the 14 Republican legislators who voted for the "no-excuse" vote-by-mail legislation two years ago.
The complaint was filed late Tuesday night in the state Commonwealth Court.
