Beaver Speaks

Here comes Lt. Col. Diane Beaver, a former staff judge advocate at Guantanamo Bay who wrote an infamous memo in October 2002 urging more brutal interrogations. “I have been vilified by some for it.” Poor baby.

“I cannot accept responsibility for what happened in my legal opinion… Did not expect my opinion … would become the final word on interrogation policies and practices in the Department of Defense… In hindsight I can only conclude that others chose not to write on this issue in order not to be linked to it. For me, that was not an option.”

She said she was trying to prevent the next attack. “My legal opinion was not a blank check … for these interrogation plans.”
