According to HBO, the first six episodes of The Last of Us have garnered an average of 30.4 million viewers since the show's premiere on January 15. The premiere episode is getting close to reaching 40 million viewers.
The 30.4 million figure, if it holds as more returns come in on the final three episodes, would mean that The Last of Us is bigger than House of the Dragon, which averaged 29 million cross-platform viewers throughout the course of its run in the late summer and fall of 2022.
If the 30.4 million figure holds as more returns come in on the final three episodes, then it would mean that The Last of Us is bigger than House of the Dragon.
It would appear that The Last of Us has outperformed House of the Dragon if the current estimate of 30.4 million viewers is maintained once additional returns are received on the last three episodes.
The number of individuals who watched the series finale on Sunday, 8.2 million, is an increase of 74.5 percent when compared to the number of viewers who watched the series debut in January, which was 4.7 million.
The vast majority of the show's viewers tune in to the following programming on HBO Max: Only around 12 percent of the show's total first-night viewers (846,000 out of 6.84 million through episode eight) watched at 9 p.m. on the main HBO cable channel.
This does not include the episode that aired on Super Bowl Sunday (which streamed two days early). Although some of the totals come from on-air reruns and playbacks via DVRs, the vast majority of viewers are accessing the content through HBO Max.
Since the last season of Game of Thrones averaged more than 44 million viewers throughout the course of its run in 2019, The Last of Us has garnered the largest cumulative audience of any series on HBO with 30.4 million viewers (its seventh season in 2017 came in at 32.5 million viewers).
