Iowa 2012 GOP Presidential Power Rankings: The winner needs ‘that special something’

Iowa 2012 GOP Presidential Power Rankings: The winner needs ‘that special something’

If there has been a single thread that has connected the previous 11 editions of The Iowa Independent’s Power Rankings, it has been an overall feeling of discontent among Republicans as activists in the state search for someone who represents their views and that they believe also stands a good chance of unseating Democratic incumbent Barack Obama. With the Ames Straw Poll a memory and, thanks in part to a timed entry by Texas Gov. Rick Perry, showing very little bounce for the top two finishers, our panelists seem more intent on the political end game and which candidate has the mixture of organization, charisma and “that special something” to take the race all the way to the finish line

Ohio Senate votes to curb collective bargaining rights for public employees

Ohio Senate votes to curb collective bargaining rights for public employees

As battles over anti-union bills continue in Michigan, Indiana and Wisconsin, Ohio may be the first one to actually pass legislation that limits collective bargaining rights for public employee unions. The Ohio Senate narrowly approved such a bill on Wednesday. It includes changes unveiled by its Republican authors earlier this week that reinstate collective-bargaining powers for the state’s more than 300,000 firefighters, police officers, teachers and other public workers, but only on the issues of wages, hours and certain terms and conditions
