Nasa showed off the first prototype of a new spacesuit designed for NASA moon missionon Wednesday. The suit is made to fit the first astronauts who are expected to go back to the moon's surface in the next few years and comes with special accessories.
At an event for the media and students at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, the latest in moon wear was shown. Axiom Space is a Texas company that Nasa hired to make suits for Artemis, which is the next moon program after Apollo.

The first spacesuits were made in the late 1950s for the first man-in-space mission by the United States. They were shiny silver. By the end of the next decade, they were white and puffy, and they were worn with boots for walking on the Moon. The bright orange "leisure" space suit for inside the spacecraft came out in the 1980s.
As billionaires who care about their brands have started traveling to the edge of the atmosphere this decade, functional space fashion has become more diverse. Elon Musk's SpaceX, Jeff Bezos's Blue Origin, and Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic have all made their own suits.
NASA, on the other hand, has shown off a working model of the new spacesuits its astronauts will wear on the planned Artemis III mission, which will be the first human-led landing on the Moon by the agency since the Apollo mission in 1972. And the design is sleeker than the boxy SpaceX suits and less cheesy than Blue Origin's cobalt coveralls (which Bezos wore with a cowboy hat) and Virgin Galactic's Tron-style uniforms.
For the Artemis III mission, Axiom Space is in charge of the design, development, qualification, certification, and production of flight training spacesuits and support equipment, such as tools. Before the mission, the company will test the suit in a place that is like space. NASA is in charge of training astronauts, planning missions, and giving approval for service systems.
The Houston-based aerospace company Axiom Space was hired by NASA to design the prototype. It is made of an off-black fabric with blaze-orange and sky-blue (the company's brand colors) details at the shoulders, knees, wrists, and ankles. It also has a big orange Axiom logo printed on a V-shaped overlay in the middle of the chest.
The new suits, which Axiom calls the "Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit" or "AxEMU" for short, are more streamlined and flexible than the old Apollo suits. They have a wider range of motion and can be made in different sizes and fits.
NASA says they are made to fit at least 90% of the US male and female population. They will also use the latest improvements in life-support systems, pressure suits, and avionics.
The exact way the suits looked, on the other hand, was a closely guarded trade secret. The ones on display had a charcoal-gray outer layer with orange and blue accents and Axiom's logo on the chest. This was meant to hide Axiom's own design for the outer fabric.
The company said that the suits astronauts will wear on the south pole of the moon will be white because that is the best color to reflect the harsh sunlight and keep the wearer from getting too hot.
