Nasir bin Olu Dara Jones was born on September 14, 1973, in the New York City borough of Brooklyn to African American parents. Olu Dara, his father, is a Mississippi jazz and blues musician.
His mother, Fannie Ann, worked for the United States Postal Service in North Carolina. Jabari Fret, his brother, raps as Jungle and is a member of the hip hop group Bravehearts.
His father took the Yoruba name "Olu Dara" for himself. "Nasir" is an Arabic name that means "helper and protector," and "bin" means "son of". He is the cousin of Yara Shahidi and Sayeed Shahidi, both actors.
Nas and his family moved to Queensbridge Houses in the borough of Queens when he was a child. Willy "Ill Will" Graham, his next-door neighbor, influenced his interest in hip hop by playing him records.
