The Miss Universe Organization has cut ties with its Indonesian franchisee and will not hold a show in Malaysia as planned because contestants told police that local organizers had sexually harassed them. In a statement released late Saturday, the New York-based group said it was breaking ties with PT Capella Swastika Karya and its National Director, Poppy Capella.
Six contestants in the Miss Universe Indonesia pageant recently filed complaints with the police. They said that local officials asked them to strip down to their underwear for "body checks" to look for scars or cellulite in a room with about two dozen people, including men.
Five of the contestants said that a picture was taken of them without their tops on. The Miss Universe Organization said on the social media site X, which used to be called Twitter.
In light of what we have learned took place at Miss Universe Indonesia, it has become clear that this franchise has not lived up to our brand standards and ethics.- Miss Universe Organization
It said that it had "decided to terminate the relationship with its current franchise in Indonesia, PT Capella Swastika Karya, and its National Director, Poppy Capella."It thanked the contestants for being brave enough to come forward and said that "providing a safe place for women"was the organization's priority.
In an Instagram post, Capella said that she does not agree with any kind of sexual abuse.
I emphasize that I, as the national director and license owner for Miss Universe Indonesia, was not involved at all and have never known, ordered, requested, or allowed anyone who plays a role and participated in the process of organizing Miss Universe Indonesia 2023 to commit sexual harassment through body checking as reported.- Poppy Capella
It also said that this year's Miss Universe Malaysia event will not happen because the Indonesian franchisee is also in charge of that one. The winner of Miss Indonesia 2023 will be set up to fight in the Miss Universe contest in El Salvador at the end of this year.
The Miss Universe Indonesia event took place from July 29 to August 3, and the winner was Fabienne Nicole Groeneveld. She will represent Indonesia at the Miss Universe contest in 2023.
Miss Universe said it would make sure she could compete in the final, which will be held in El Salvador in November. This year's Indonesia pageant was also criticized for making a "significant change" to the rules by getting rid of the minimum height standard after the winner had already been chosen.
The Miss Universe Organization said in a statement that it wanted to "make it extremely clear that there are no measurements such as height, weight, or body dimensions required to join a Miss Universe pageant worldwide."
Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim-majority country with a reputation for being tolerant, pluralistic, and respectful of freedom of expression, has been getting more and more upset about the event. Most of Indonesia's 277 million Muslims are reasonable, but in recent years, a small group of extremists has been getting louder. Indonesia is a secular country with 277 million people.
In 2013, a lot of conservative Muslim groups protested the Miss World competition in Indonesia. As a result, the contest was moved from Jakarta to the resort island of Bali, and all of the more than 130 contestants had to wear traditional long sarongs instead of the sexy bikinis that have always been part of the competition.

Conclusion

Miss Universe cuts ties with Indonesia chapter and cancels this year's Malaysia event after contestants said local organizers had sexually harassed them. In an email sent late Saturday night, the US-based organization said it had chosen to end its contract with PT Capella Swastika Karya and its national director Poppy Capella, who is also the license holder for Miss Universe Malaysia.
