The story revolves around the interrogation of Roger "Verbal" Kint, a small-time con artist who is one of only two survivors of slaughter and fire aboard a ship moored at the Los Angeles Port.
Kint recounts an interrogator a complex narrative of events that brought him and his criminal associates to the boat, and of a mysterious crime boss known as Keyser Söze who controlled them, via flashback and narration.
The film's title was inspired by a column in Spy magazine called The Usual Suspects, which was named after one of Claude Rains' most famous lines in the classic film Casablanca, and Singer felt it would make a wonderful film title.
The film premiered in a few cinemas after being screened out of competition at the Cannes Film Festival in 1995. It got positive reviews and was ultimately released to a broader audience. Born on the Fourth of July is a biographical anti-war drama film from 1989, based on Ron Kovic's 1976 book of the same name. It stars Tom Cruise, Kyra Sedgwick, Raymond J. Barry, Jerry Levine, Frank Whaley, and Willem Dafoe and is directed by Oliver Stone and written by Stone and Kovic.
The film follows Kovic (Cruise) through his upbringing, military duty, paralysis during the Vietnam War, and shift to anti-war activism over a 20-year span. It's the second chapter in Stone's Vietnam War trilogy, following Platoon (1986) and coming before Heaven & Earth (1993).
In 1976, producer Martin Bregman bought the film rights to the novel and recruited Stone, a Vietnam veteran himself, to co-write the script with Kovic, who was to be portrayed by Al Pacino.
After Pacino and Bregman departed after Stone optioned the novel in 1978, the film adaptation got stuck in development hell, prompting him and Kovic to put the project on hold. The project was resurrected at Universal Pictures after the release of Platoon, with Stone attached to direct.
The principal shooting took place from October to December 1988 on sites in the Philippines, Texas, and Inglewood, California, and lasted 65 days. After reshoots, the picture ended up costing $17.8 million, above its original $14 million production budget.
Critics lauded "Born on the Fourth of July" for its narrative, Cruise's acting, and Stone's directing when the movie was released. The film was a box office triumph, earning more than $161 million worldwide, making it the ninth highest-grossing picture of 1989.
It earned eight nominations at the 62nd Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Cruise, which was his first nomination, and the picture won Best Director, Stone's second, and Best Film Editing. 8 Seconds
8 Seconds is a biographical drama film directed by John G. Avildsen and released in 1994. Its name alludes to the amount of time a bull rider must remain aboard in order for a ride to be scored. It stars Luke Perry as American bull-riding champion Lane Frost and is based on his life and career.
Tuff Hedeman is played by Stephen Baldwin, while Cody Lambert is played by Red Mitchell. In late 1993, soon after what would have been Frost's 30th birthday, the film was finished and shown.
Lane Frost (Cameron Finley) learns the ropes of the bull riding profession from his father, Clyde (James Rebhorn), an experienced rodeo bronco rider himself, as he grows up in Oklahoma.
Lane (Luke Perry) travels the western rodeo circuit with his closest pals, Tuff Hedeman (Stephen Baldwin) and Cody Lambert, as he reaches his adolescent and early adult years (Red Mitchell). He meets and falls in love with Kellie Kyle (Cynthia Geary), a teenage barrel racer, and the two marry in 1984.
Lane's reputation and renown grow, and he puts more pressure on himself to be all that everyone wants him to be, and he wants to prove that he is as good as they think he is. A cheating scandal, doubts about Kellie's commitment, and an almost broken neck derail his path to the world title.
The video also follows him as he competes against Red Rock, a bull that no cowboy has ever been able to remain atop for more than 8 seconds. It reduces the number of rides in the series to three. At the Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo in 1989, he was the second-to-last rider.
He dismounts after his 8-second ride on the bull known as "Taking Care Of Business," but the bull turns around and strikes him in the side with his horn, fracturing several ribs and cutting a major artery. He died on the arena floor before being taken to the hospital due to severe internal bleeding.
The last scene depicts Hedeman competing for the world title at the National Finals Rodeo later that year. He continues to ride after the 8-second bell rings, staying on for an extra 8 seconds as a memorial to his slain closest buddy.
