Robert B. Parker's Jesse Stone is the protagonist in a series of detective books. They were among his last compositions, as well as the first in which he utilized a third-person narrative.

The series consists of nine novels, beginning with Night Passage (1997) and concluding with Split Image (2010), which Parker finished but did not survive to see published before his death in January 2010.

Michael Brandman was the first to continue the series. Reed Farrel Coleman took over as the series' writer in April 2014. Nine TV movies have been made based on the books.

CBS commissioned the first eight films, which aired from 2005 to 2012. The Hallmark Channel took up a ninth film, which premiered on October 18, 2015. The production of a tenth film is underway. At the start of the series, the character is about 35 years old.

He was a minor league baseball shortstop who had his career cut short due to a shoulder injury. He was born in Arizona and reared in California. Because of a drinking problem that started following his divorce from his beautiful wife, Jennifer, he was asked to quit his position as a murder investigator with the LAPD Robbery-Homicide Division.

Stone gets appointed as the police chief of the tiny town of Paradise, Massachusetts (loosely modeled on the actual town of Marblehead, Massachusetts) after showing up intoxicated to an interview for the position.

Stone soon realizes that the town has major crimes, is battling the mafia, has outrageously wayward spouses, and is dealing with a triple murder, and that his work would be more difficult than he anticipated. But he rises to the occasion, starting by filing a corruption complaint against the town council president and detaining him.

Stone usually carries a.38 Special snub-nosed revolver in the books, the same weapon he used as an LAPD detective. Stone's cases as chief of the Paradise Police Department are chronicled in the series, as are his problems with alcohol and his complex relationship with his ex-wife Jenn.

The police officers in the local police department respect and admire him. Captain Healy, the State Police Homicide Commander, establishes a strong working connection and friendship with him.

Jesse Stone, a profoundly disturbed guy, was an unusual character for the author. "Jesse is a much more wounded person who is coming to grips with himself as he goes along," Parker said, comparing Stone to Spenser, the protagonist of his first series and the one for which he was best known.

There is considerable character overlap with the Spenser novels, particularly with Healy and Sunny Randall, and indirectly with Susan Silverman (in Night and Day).

Jesse Stone: Thin Ice 2009

Captain Healy of the State Police is assaulted but is rescued by Jesse, who, although being injured, manages to fire a few rounds at the mysterious attacker. Healy confesses to Jesse in the hospital that he has been spying on his nephew, who may be sleeping with his saxophone teacher. Despite the town council's objections, Jesse starts an investigation into the incident.

The town council members believe the police force is already stretched too tight, and they, along with Internal Affairs, are worried about Jesse's involvement in six shooting situations. They also don't like the fact that Jesse fired Officer D'Angelo because he didn't like him.

The town council adored him since he issued three times as many parking fines as the other police and manned the town's speed trap, which brought in a lot of money for Paradise.

Jesse refuses to have the speed trap staffed because he believes it is immoral and instead chops down the tree blocking the speed limit sign, rendering the speed trap useless. Meanwhile, Jesse continues to contact Jenn daily. She's thinking about moving in with Elliot, but Jesse warns her that it's immoral to live with her producer. She hangs up the phone on him.

Jesse continues his treatment, but Dr. Dix seems to be experiencing difficulties of his own. He pays a visit to Jesse at his office and admits that he misses his days as a policeman. Jesse offers to buy Dix supper since he needs a buddy.

Despite being ordered not to, Jesse continues to investigate Captain Healy's shooting. He inquires about the shooting with Gino Fish but receives no response. He also speaks with Sister Mary John, who says it's possible it's related to teen prostitution and offers him three names.

Jesse calls Gino Fish once again, knowing his dislike for prostitution, and Fish tells Jesse that he will concentrate his inquiry on the second name Sister Mary John provided him, Teddy Leaf, without explicitly naming the individual.

Meanwhile, Jesse starts sleeping with Sidney Greenstreet, the Internal Affairs investigator who is investigating him. He uses his clout with her to get information about Leaf and then starts to pursue him.

When Jesse informs Captain Healy of this, Healy becomes enraged and advises Jesse not to follow Leaf since he is very dangerous. Jesse ignores this and follows Leaf in a pub restroom, threatening him.

Jesse is warned by Greenstreet to tread cautiously because she knows how he operates: he sets people up. With Suitcase's assistance, Jesse persuades Leaf to follow him to an apartment, where he blindsides him.

He binds him up in the flat and calls the cops anonymously, who arrest him for breaking and carrying a weapon, both of which are serious parole breaches that will land him in prison for a long time. Since they can't get him on the gun range, Jesse thinks this is better than nothing.
