The Mission Institution was established in 1883 by the Southern German Conference of the Methodist faith. In 1889, the name was changed to Blinn Memorial College in honor of Reverend Christian Blinn of New York, who had contributed significantly to the school's establishment.

The college was formed with the intention of training young men for the ministry, but academic courses were added over time to suit public demand. After five years as a men-only institution, Blinn College became co educational in 1888.

The school was of academy rank until 1927. The Board of Trustees established a junior college that year, led by President Philip Deschner. The institution amalgamated with Southwestern University in 1930. (Georgetown, Texas).

Brenham citizens obtained a new charter in 1934, and Blinn College, a private nonsectarian junior college, was established with nine regents as the board of management. All ties to Southwestern University and the Methodist denominations were dissolved in February 1937.

On June 8, 1937, a successful election was held in Washington County to establish a public junior college district and levy a minor tax. As a result, Blinn became Texas' first county-owned junior college district.

After Allen Academy's junior college program closed in 1970, Blinn opened a new facility in Bryan. Bryan and College Station programs were combined at the Bryan Campus on Villa Maria Road in 1997. Blinn's Schulenburg Campus debuted in 1997, and its Sealy Campus launched in 2005.

Blinn celebrated the grand opening of its new academic facilities at The Texas A&M University System's RELLIS Campus in Bryan in August 2018.
