United Nations climate change talks get underway next week in Tianjin, China.
In advance of the talks, international development group Oxfam is calling for negotiators to work to set up a climate fund to help poor countries deal with the impacts of climate change.
In a statement, Kelly Dent, Senior Climate Change Advisor for Oxfam, said even though countries are not expected to agree to a binding climate treaty at December negotiations in Cancun, Mexico, countries can make progress on the climate fund in Tianjin and finalize the plans in Cancun.
She said:
There is still a lot to play for in Cancun. Establishing a climate fund that helps the world’s poorest men and women adapt to a changing climate will save lives and could help salvage hopes for a global deal.
