Republicans have been thrilled that Rep. Mike Castle (R-Del.) is looking like a shoo-in for a Senate seat in the traditionally blue state of Delaware. Which explains why they’re reacting with such hostility to the announcement by Tea Party Expressthat the group is backing his challenger, Christine O’Donnell (R), in the state’s upcoming September 14 primary.
For those who missed it, Tea Party Express has been getting a lot of press lately for their outsized rolein vaulting Joe Miller (R) to prominence in Alaska in his apparent (but not official) primary victory over Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) last week. The group, which spent around $600,000 on Miller, now says it’s preparing a similar infusion of media advocacy on behalf of O’Donnell and expects to be up on the airwaves by the end of the week.
Now, Delaware isn’t Alaska, and O’Donnell also seems to lack the crucial element of surprise that Miller enjoyed up north, where Murkowski paid him little attention. But Rep. Castle has received his favor share of RINO (Republican In Name Only) accusations from right wing activists, so another well targeted media campaign and a low turnout Republican primary means an upset isn’t out of the question.
