The House passed a new border security bill — identical to the bill the Senate passed last week other than the name — by voice vote this morning during its special session, a legislative aide confirmed to TWI. The Senate passed a $600 million, fully-paid-for bill to increase funding to border patrol efforts, but House leaders decided to create a new bill because of Constitutional rules that revenue measures must originatein the House.
The bill will now have to be approved by the Senate before going to the president to be signed into law.
The Senate is in recess until mid-September, but some House members have called for them to return to pass the bill. Carl Huse of the New York Times reported on Twitter that Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick (D-Ariz.) said the Senate should be called in for a special session to address the bill.
