The oil industry is arguing that the oil spill response bills slated to come up in both the House and Senate before the August recess would harm the economy and kill jobs.
Citing internal analysis, American Petroleum Institute President Jack Gerard told reporters on a conference call today that restrictions on offshore drilling in the bills are premature, as the cause of the BP oil spill has not yet been determined. Gerard also warned against legislation that offers “prescriptive” requirements on well design and drilling operations. The House bill, which Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) unveiledyesterday, requires specific blow-out preventer technology, for instance. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) is expected to release a combined energy and oil spill response bill later today.
