I note this because Iran’s violent seizure of a southern Iraqi oil field looked scary last week. But the Iranian troops have withdrawn— although not entirely out of Iraqi territory. Or, put another way, not entirely out of territory Iraq claims, and so the two nations will pursue negotiations delineating where their border ought to be. That’s a question fraught with danger. Longstanding border disputes, coupled with internal political shakiness in either of those countries, has a history of igniting bloody disasters.
