Here’s Mairead Maguire, recipient of the 1976 Nobel Peace Prize, blasting today’s surprise announcementthat President Obama has been named the newest honoree.
“„They say this is for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and co-operation between peoples, and yet he continues the policy of militarism and occupation of Afghanistan, instead of dialogue and negotiations with all parties to the conflict.
In awarding Obama the prize, Maguire adds, “the Nobel Committee has not met the conditions of Alfred Nobel’s will where he stipulates it is to be awarded to those who work for an end to militarism and war.”
Maguire won the Nobel at the age of 32 for her work promoting peace in Northern Ireland. And she’s still at it. Earlier this year she spentfive days in an Israeli prison for attempting to deliver aid to Gaza.
Just goes to show that this concept of “peace” occupies a spectrum.
