DETROIT — Among the McCain traveling press, the hot topic of conversation the last few days has been the senator’s recent elusiveness. McCain had not taken questions from the full press corps since Friday at the Ixtapalapa police station in Mexico City. By comparison, that same week McCain also gave avails in Ohio, in the air en route to Colombia, on the ground in Colombia, and on the flight to Mexico City.
Yesterday, reporters grumbled as the bulk of the press corps waited on the tarmac in Pittsburgh for McCain to arrive for the flight to Michigan, while the candidate gave a press conference for local press and the small group of national pool reporters. Rumors began circulating that fewer avails would be the campaign’s new M.O. under the direction of Steve Schmidt.
The campaign responded today — in the wake of McCain economic adviser Phil Gramm’s statements on the economy — by holding an avail at the request of the television networks seeking comment on the controversy. Following today’s town hall meeting at the Bayloff Stamped Products Factory here, McCain took questions from the local and national press for about 15 minutes. Here’s a clip of McCain addressing Gramm’s comments:
McCain has spent a lot of time on the trail promoting his message of limited government interference in the economy and chastising Congress for its too-free spending of taxpayer dollars. However, this did not prevent him from supporting the $30-billion federal loan to J.P. Morgan Chase for its purchase of the failing investment bank, Bear Stearns. Is this a philosophical contradiction? You be the judge.
