DETROIT — Among the McCain traveling press, the hot topic of conversation the last few days has been the senator’s recent elusiveness. McCain had not taken questions from the full press corps since last Friday, a week ago, at the Ixtapalapa police station in Mexico City. By comparison, that same week McCain also gave avails in Ohio, while aloft en route to Colombia, on the ground in Colombia and on the flight to Mexico City.
Wednesday, reporters grumbled as the bulk of the press corps waited on the tarmac in Pittsburgh for McCain to arrive for the flight to Michigan, while the candidate gave a press conference for local press and the small group of national pool reporters. Rumors began circulating that fewer avails would be the campaign’s new M.O. under the direction of Steve Schmidt, now in charge of day-to-day operations.
The campaign responded Thursday — in the wake of McCain economic adviser Phil Gramm’s statements on the economy — by holding an avail at the request of TV networks seeking comment on the controversy. Following the town hall meeting at the Bayloff Stamped Products Factory, McCain took questions from the local and national press for about 15 minutes. Here’s a clip of McCain addressing Gramm’s comments:
So, Gramm is "Dr. Phil," and, remember, Obama is "Dr. No." Apparently, the presidential campaign has now devolved to the level of schoolyard name-calling. And don’t we already have a president who likes nicknames?
We still have four months until the general election.
