I’m still trying to figure out just what happened with Peter Galbraith, the possibly-former top American on the United Nations’ Afghanistan team who reportedly broke with the United Nations over its relatively soft line on election fraud. But until then: the U.N.-backed Afghan elections commission has ordered a partial recountof contested ballots in the disputed election. The 10 percent of ballots being recounted could get Hamid Karzai’s lead down to 46 percent, according to the opposition camp of candidate Abdullah Abdullah, which would prompt a second round of voting.
It’s unclear right now how long a recount will take.
Update: Politico’s Laura Rozen beats me to an interview with Galbraith, which just burns me up, and Galbraith tells her that the story is hogwash and he’s not left his position with the U.N. in Afghanistan. But a nameless diplomatic source elaborates that the divide between Galbraith and U.N. special representative Kai Eide on how to deal with Afghan election fraud is real.
