The Obama campaign is circulating a videofeaturing Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and indicted Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) at a joint press conference in July — and that’s not even the damaging part.
In the video, Palin says that she reached her position on federal earmark reform as a response to “the writing on the wall,” gleaned from the positions of the two major party presidential candidates.
I noticed this is just a 19-second clip that could easily be taken out of context, so I went looking for more of the press conference, which I found at Crooks and Liars. The excerpt above appears at about 6:54 into the following clip. Unfortunately for Palin, her words don’t sound any different in context.
Recent news reports indicate Palin never had any problem pursuing and accepting earmarksas mayor of Wasilla, and as governor, she requested another $200 million in earmarks from Uncle Ted just this year.
This video would seem to lay to rest any notion that Palin is innately a high-minded earmark reformer — but rather a prescient tea-leaf-reading politician, who saw which way the wind was blowing.
