It’s no secret that many within the McCain campaign are not happy with the volume and tone of what they regard as the media’s fawning coverage of Sen. , the presumptive Democratic nominee. Today, the McCain camp released a three-minute web video— set to the tune of Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons’ "Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You" — documenting some of the more glaring examples of what it perceives as favoritism. After watching the video, titled " Love," its hard not to sympathize with Sen. John McCain. Chris Matthews provides much of the footage, and yes, it is embarrassing to watch. Have a look:
** Production notes: The McCain campaign put another version of the video on its Website, asking visitors to pick which love song they like best. The two versions are identical, except the second one is set to Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons’ "My Eyes Adored You." So when the McCain camp searches for music to signify love and adulation, it doesn’t look to Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye or Barry White — any of whom probably would have made for a more entertaining video. No sir, for the McCain organization, love songs begin and end with Frankie Valli.
It’s nice to see the campaign take a stab at being funny. Now, it could use some work on being hip and edgy. It has great material to work with, but music can say a lot. Frankie Valli is OK, I guess, but his falsetto voice screams pasty-white, old-fashioned — and safe. It might be good for drawing in older Baby Boomers, who came of age in the early-1960s, but it’s probably not going to do much for most people under the age of 50. It could be that McCain is largely writing off "the kids" — instead focusing on the older, mostly-white base. But I think McCain could reach a broader audience — while still appealing to the Republican base that is innately sympathetic to liberal media bias allegations — with a funnier, edgier video.**
