Shirin Ebadi Backs Obama
At the bottom of Glenn Kessler’s piece in The Washington Post on President Obama’s Iran strategy is this telling quote:
“„Shirin Ebadi, an Iranian human rights activist who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2003, said she has no complaints about Obama’s rhetoric. “What happens in Iran regards the people themselves, and it is up to them to make their voices heard,” she said in a telephone interview from Geneva. “I respect his comments on all the events in Iran, but I think it is sufficient.”
Ebadi is one of the leading voices against the regime. She’s been persecuted by it for years, and has courageously used the platform bequeathed by her Nobel laureate-ship to call attention to its abuses. If she’s telling the United States that Obama is striking the right tone on the unfolding Iranian uprising, perhaps it’s time for ignorant columnists to stop calling Obama “objectively” on the side of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
