The third-ranking Republican in the House, who had been concentrating on a campaign against cap-and-trade legislation, has swiftly become one of the most vocal critics of the White House’s response to the Iranian protests. Pence told CBS Newsthat “It is appropriate for the leader of the free world at this time to speak a word of encouragement to those dissidents in the street” and iscoming out shortly with a resolution of support for the “dissidents.”
It will express its concern regarding the reported irregularities of the presidential election of 12 June, 2009. It will condemn the violence against demonstrators by pro-government militia in Tehran in the wake of the elections. It will affirm our belief in the universality of individual rights and the importance of democratic and fair elections. And lastly, and most importantly, it will express the support of the American people for all Iranian citizens who struggle for freedom, civil liberties and the protection of the rule of law.
I asked Pence’s office for the text as soon as it’s ready and am interested to know who’s co-sponsoring it. This is a more starkly political resolution than it might have been if a less prominent partisan had introduced it.
