President Obama garnered headlines Friday, when he used his massive email list from the campaign to promote his legislative agendafor the first time, in support of the stimulus package working its way through Congress.
Not to be outdone, Obama’s former rival, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) today put his considerably smaller list to work, with an email blast encouraging supporters to sign a petition opposing the stimulus.
From the email I just received (which, amusingly, came in the form of a FWD — maybe McCain has finally figured out this wacky email thing!):
“„I appreciate the discussions President Obama is having with my Republican colleagues, but the time for talking has come to an end and we must now begin some serious negotiation. But as of yet, Republicans have not been given the opportunity to be involved. The House of Representatives passed a stimulus bill without a single Republican supporting it. In the Senate, the Democrat leadership is trying to jam the existing proposal through regardless of reservations from a number of members. With so much at stake, the last thing we need is partisanship driving our attempts to turn the economy around.
Well, it looks like the Mac really is back, and he’s armed with GOP talking points. Considering that Obama met repeatedly with congressional Republicans, House Democrats included hundreds of billions of dollars worth of tax cuts, as well as other concessions,in an effort to bring Republicans on board — and the Senate is considering amendments to the stimulus bill as I type this — I’m not sure how he can really argue that “Republicans have not been given the opportunity to be involved.”
Remember that post-election speculationthat McCain the Party-Bucking Maverick would rise again from the ashes of his failed presidential bid?
Yeah, maybe not so much.
