So, a few rounds of calls and background conversations later, the picture that emerges is that Leon Panetta, President Obama’s pick to head the Central Intelligence Agency, just… didn’t submit the paperwork that the Senate Select Intelligence Committee asked for. A Senate Democratic aide expects that his now-delayed hearingwill pick up next week.
Apparently there’s a hefty amount of financial disclosure that Panetta didn’t submit. No one on the Senate side sees malice here. One person I talked to attributed Panetta’s tardiness to the relative lateness of the nomination itself — unlike the other cabinet level positions, Panetta didn’t get the nod until earlier this month, leaving him with a shorter timeframe to get his papers in order. In any event, the topline that all parties drilled into me today was NO STORY HERE. Panetta’s nomination doesn’t appear to be in any actual danger.
