CHARLESTON, S.C. —A crowded room of volunteers frantically making calls in the last days of the election wasn’t enough to keep Fred Thompson from being the first candidate to conscede defeat in the South Carolina Primary.
Thompson had told supporters in recent days that he was drawing a line in the sand in South Carolina, buy while he conceded he wouldn’t take the state, he remains in a close competition with Mitt Romney for third place. As results have been reported the two have seesawed back and forth over who captured more votes, but remaining very close to 15 percent.
A third place finish may be enough for Romney, who was campaigning in Florida Saturday afternoon after winning the Nevada Caucuses Saturday and can use his personal fortune to finance his campaign. But Thompson’s poor showing is fueling speculation that he will soon drop out of the race for the GOP nomination.
