At her weekly press briefingthis morning, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Cal.) illustrated well how a political mind works in an election year. First, she reiterated her chamber’s dedication to enacting an economic stimulus package long before November. (She took seven questions on the stimulus bill, and answered all of them at length.)
But asked about whether the House will tackle long-term spending this year (recognized by anyone watching as a problemmany factors more severe than the current slowdown), she said this:
“I don’t know. I have no idea. I think that it is an issue that we need to address, but I don’t know if the House will get around to doing it. We haven’t really engaged in that discussion yet.”
Message to the electorate: The check’s in the mail, and we won’t remind you that America’s long-term fiscal health is in the sewer. (Did we mention that your check is borrowed from Asia?)
