Mullah Omar: No Talks With Karzai, Period
Is that your opening negotiation position, Mullah Omar?
From the BBC:
Taleban leader Mullah Omar has denied there are any talks under way to end the insurgency in Afghanistan, a statement from the organisation says.
He rejected reports he had written to the king of Saudi Arabia or the Afghan government about ending the conflict, the statement in his name said.
He said reports that Taleban and Afghan officials had met were part of a propaganda campaign.
This is just smart negotiating tactics. Start out unyielding to see what the other fellow will offer! How can we get you to say yes? I won’t take no for an answer…
OK OK, Joshua Foust, I’m only kidding. Sorry to be so cant-y. It would seem, as you’ve said all along, that outreach to Taliban-central is doomed to fail. I still wonder about introducing tribal cleavages to fracture the insurgency, though. And about the alternatives.
