Volodymyr Zelenskyy Named As 2022 Time's Person Of The Year
2022 Time's Person Of The Year is Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who is still leading his country against Russian forces. The magazine also gave its annual award to "the spirit of Ukraine."
In an essay about the choices, Time's editor-in-chief, Edward Felsenthal, called the choice of Zelenskyy "most clear-cut in memory." Since 1927, the magazine has given this award every year. The news came out on Wednesday, along with a long profile of the wartime leader.
It says this is because of how he has managed Ukraine's defense, which has stopped Russia's advance and helped the country regain key territories, as well as how it is seen by the public.

Zelensky named Time's 2022 'Person of the Year'
A lot of the world has been watching the war in Ukraine for the past year, as the country fights back against Russian attacks and shows the world who it is. Time magazine's Person of the Year for 2022 is President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and "the spirit of Ukraine." This may not be a surprise to many people.
Since 1927, the magazine has given this award every year. The news came out on Wednesday, along with a long profile of the wartime leader. It says this is because of how he has managed Ukraine's defense, which has stopped Russia's advance and helped the country regain key territories, as well as how it is seen by the public.
Whether one looks at this story of Ukraine with a sense of hope or a sense of fear, and the story is, of course, not fully written yet ... Zelenskyy has really galvanized the world in a way we haven't seen in decades.- Editor-in-Chief Edward Felsenthal
On the cover, there is a profile of Zelenskyy wearing his signature army-green sweater. Other figures and crowds of protesters are in the background. In between, they are blue and yellow Ukrainian flags and bright yellow sunflowers.
The article says that Zelenskyy's courage has inspired other Ukrainians in their fight for freedom because he refused to leave the country when Russia first invaded in February and made dangerous trips to the front lines in the months after.
And it shows how he is planning to keep Ukraine in the minds of his supporters all over the world. "If we fall out of focus, we are in danger," his chief of staff, Andiry Yermak, said.
Zelenskyy is easy to recognize because he always wears army-green t-shirts and quarter-zips to his many virtual appearances at global conferences, speeches to educational institutions, and visits with both foreign leaders and Hollywood stars.
The power of fashion in war is shown by Putin's puffy coat and Zelenskyy's T-shirts. Time, like many others, says that the 44-year-old former actor and comedian, who was elected president in 2019 after playing one on TV, uses a unique background and set of skills to deal with the current situation.
[Zelenskyy] was adaptable, trained not to lose his nerve under pressure. He knew how to read a crowd and react to its moods and expectations. Now his audience was the world. He was determined not to let them down.- Simon Shuster
But the war has also changed Zelenskyy, and not just in the way it has hurt him physically. Oleksiy Arestovych, a military adviser, told Time that the president has stopped moving quickly and making jokes and has taken on a more aggressive stance.
"He's lost that actorly quality, and he's turned into a boss," he said. As its person of the year, Time not only praises the president but also honors "the spirit of Ukraine."
A separate article gives credit to some of the people who have helped Ukraine stay strong and get back on its feet. These people include doctors, humanitarian leaders, volunteers, and journalists. Even though some of this help came from outside of Ukraine, the publication also gives credit to Ukrainians.
"If the choices their President articulated gave moral clarity to an era we'd mostly been scrolling through, it was people who gave it meaning, by acting," it reads.
The women of Iran were also named Heroes of the Year by the magazine. Blackpink was named Entertainer of the Year, and Aaron Judge was named Athlete of the Year.
Time chose Zelenskyy from a shortlist of 10 people that included Chinese President Xi Jinping, U.S. Rep. Liz Cheney, gun safety advocates, and U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen. It made the announcement two days after the British business newspaper Financial Times named Zelenskyy its person of the year.
He told the newspaper in that interview that he doesn't think of himself as brave.
I am more responsible than I am brave. I just hate to let people down.- Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy
Wednesday, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the president of Ukraine, was named 2022 Time's Person of the Year for his strong leadership during Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
The magazine also gave awards to people who represent the "Spirit of Ukraine." It did this to show how strong and brave the people are who have kept the country going and helped those in need.
